Itinerary
Departure from Vlora in the morning around 08.30 for Berat. Arrival in Berat around 11.00. We begin our visits to Berat, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Berat is located at the foot of Mount Tomorr and on the banks of the Osum River. Berat is known for its whitewashed houses – with windows that seem to be built on top of each other, from which they have taken the name “the city of a thousand windows”. The city still retains a unique style of architecture, with narrow streets paved with stone. We will visit the Castle, the Church of St. Mary which has been turned into the Onufri Museum, which contains a collection of icons. Onufri, after whom this museum is named, was an Albanian master painter of the 16th century, who painted many church icons in Albania and Greece and is famous for the red color that bears his name. Berat is also known as two of the oldest Bibles “New Testament”, one from the 6th century and the other from the 9th century AD, were found here.
-Lunch can be in a traditional house inside the castle.
After lunch departure to the ancient city of Apollonia. The journey takes about 1.30 min. Apollonia is one of the most important ancient centers in the Roman period. In the first century BC, Octavian Augustus studied philosophy there until he heard the news of Caesar’s assassination in the Senate and returned to become the future emperor.
